FYI on TemporoMandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)

Whew! So that’s it – vertigo and migraine are not just simple physical conditions, they are actually symptoms of much complex syndrome – TMJ (TemporoMandibular Joint) Syndrome.

And I’m positive. Damn vertigo, migraine, RSI-sh, shoulder and back pain, stiffed neck, ear buzz, etc.

Tsk... Tsk...

Rings a bell? I’ve heard that term before, my friend used to wear something transparent in his mouth and he told us that it’s for his TMJ. Now I know what it is called – “appliance”. And I am wearing something like that appliance right now! Argh, uncomfty! This is phase 1 of my TMJ treatment, phase 2 might include braces and brackets!

Oh, TMJS. If only you’re JTMS, I might fall in love with you!

Urban Dictionary defines TMJ here.

But here’s a more insightful definition from TMJ specialists:

Many of the symptoms of TMJ have overlapping characteristics, which often mimic other conditions. Indeed, it is quite common for people to seek the care of a medical doctor in search of a cure or answer. Most, however, never think to contact a dentist trained in TMJ since the symptoms are primarily medical in nature.

Do you suffer from any of these?

• Headaches
• Jaw joint clicking or popping
• Facial Pain
• Neck pain or stiffness
• Jaw joint pain
• Worn, loose or sensitive teeth
• Limited ability to open and close your mouth
• Difficulty eating, chewing or swallowing
• Dizziness or vertigo
• Pain whenever you talk or smile
• Earaches (or ear congestion)
• Poor posture

Other classical symptoms of TMJ are:

» Difficulty closing the teeth together
» Numbness in hands/fingertips
» Difficulty in swallowing
» Back pain
» Shoulder pain

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms you could possibly have a problem with your jaw (TMJ).

Sa akin naman kasi sis, bothering sya especially nagwowork ako. :( Saka sobrang sakit pag may migraine attack tapos yung vertigo nakakatakot kasi one time super nahilo at muntik na akong magthrow up in public. Hopefully after ng therapy mawala na lahat ng associated sa TMJ.

Darn that syndrome :D Also, it’s important that when we have our dental fillings, or dental procedures, to take note that our mandibulars are aligned properly because misalignment may cause trouble on the joint unilaterally or bilaterally :D

Thankfully, aside from teeth misalignment there are no other ill effects on me. My jaws lock slightly when I yawn sometimes, but it’s not something I really worry about. Hopefully this doesn’t get any worse though.

Yeah, expensive talaga TMJ treatment/therapy. Tapos na ako sa splint or the so-called appliance. Wearing braces naman. Tapos retainers pag ok na. Wah. Dere derecho talaga ang gastos.
